Three Keys to Hearing the Voice of God

 

Hebrews 5:14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

 

John 10:27 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;

 

Psalm 103:7 He made known His ways to Moses, His deeds to the sons of Israel.

 

Lamentations 3:22-23 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

 

Key #1: Become still.

 

Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God 

 

I Kings 19:12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

 

The majority of the time that God talks to us it will be through the still, small voice. 

 

Habakkuk 2:1 I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. 

 

Mark 1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

 

We become still by removing external distractions.

 

Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

 

Matthew 14:23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.

 

2 Kings 3:15  But now bring me a harpist." While the harpist was playing, the hand of the LORD came upon Elisha

 

I Chronicles 17:16 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD,

 

Praying in the spirit helps a lot to quiet our minds.

 

I Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

 

Acts 9:36-40 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!”

 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room…Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. 

 

1. When you first start praying or listening to God, your mind will throw you a lot of distractions.

 

2. Sometimes thoughts of sins that you have done come before you and interrupt your time.

 

Isaiah 59:2 It’s your sins that have cut you off from God.

 

I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

 

3. Mind flitting about. 

 

Hebrews 12:1-2… let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…

 

Key #2: (to hearing God’s voice) God’s voice comes to us as spontaneous thoughts in our mind. 

 

I Corinthians 2:9-10 However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him— these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

 

Definition of God’s voice: God’s voice sounds like spontaneous thoughts that pop into your mind.

 

I Corinthians 6:17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

 

Romans 8:16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

 

I Corinthians 2:12,14 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us… The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

 

Your mind is a collecting ground of thoughts and not every thought that you hear is your thought.

 

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every reasoning that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

 

Matthew 16:22-23 And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You." But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."

 

Luke 4:2-3 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."

 

John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

 

Before we receive Christ, we hear two voices: the voice of your mind, and the voice of Satan. 

 

Key #3: We must learn to distinguish God’s voice from all the other voices we hear.

Test #1: I have to test the origin of the thought.

 

Test #2: I have to test the content of the thoughts.  

 

I John 4:5 They belong to this world and they articulate the spirit of this world, and the world listens to them.

 

Test #3: I have to test the fruit of the thought.

 

Matthew 7:16 By their fruit you will recognize them. 

 

Hebrews 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
