God’s Perspective on Money
Main Text
Luke 12:15–21
“Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions… This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
Big Idea:
God cares deeply about how we view and handle money because it reveals our heart and priorities.
1. Key #1 — Everything We Have Belongs to God
We are not owners — we are stewards.
Key Verses
Psalm 24:1 – “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”
Haggai 2:8 – “The silver is mine and the gold is mine.”
Matthew 25:14,19 – God entrusts His wealth and later settles accounts.
1 Chronicles 29:14 – “Everything comes from you.”
Main Thought
God gives us abilities, opportunities, and resources.
We will give an account for how we manage what He entrusted to us.
2. Key #2 — Money Must Not Control Our Lives
God doesn’t want everything we have — He wants our hearts free from money’s control.
Key Verses
Luke 16:10–12 – Faithful in little → trusted with more.
Stewardship Principle
God is the owner
We are the managers
Tithing and stewardship reveal whether we trust God with our resources.
Two Temptations With Money
Temptation #1 — Serving Money
Matthew 6:24
“You cannot serve both God and money.”
Money competes with God for our devotion and security.
Temptation #2 — Loving Money
1 Timothy 6:10
“The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”
Important truth:
Money itself is neutral
The love of money causes destruction.
Ecclesiastes 5:10
Whoever loves money never has enough.
Lies Money Tells Us
“More money will mean less work.”
“More money will solve debt.”
“If I had more money, I’d be more generous.”
Truth:
Money is an amplifier — it makes us more of what we already are.
3. Key #3 — How We Handle Money Reveals Our Heart
Key Verses
Matthew 6:21 – “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Luke 16:11 – If you are not trustworthy with worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?
Money is one of the clearest indicators of spiritual priorities.
4. Key #4 — Money Is a Test
God uses finances to see what He can entrust to us.
Key Verses
Matthew 13:12 – Whoever has will be given more.
Luke 16:10–13 – Faithful with little → faithful with much.
2 Chronicles 16:9 – God looks for hearts fully committed to Him.
Principle
What we do with money reveals whether God can trust us with:
more resources
influence
responsibility
blessing
The Real Issue
For most people it’s not an income problem — it’s a heart and spending problem.
God’s goal:
Money serves us as we serve God.
God’s Plan for Our Lives
Jeremiah 29:11 – God has good plans for our future.
Matthew 6:33 – Seek first the Kingdom of God.
Mark 8:36 – What good is gaining the world but losing your soul?
Final Takeaway
To build unshakable finances:
Recognize God owns everything
Refuse to serve or love money
Let money reflect a heart for God
Be faithful stewards of what He gives
