*We will be studying how Jesus healed the sick because we have been commanded to walk in his shoes! I Peter 2:21
E. Let’s look at three problems associated with God’s power working in our life.

11 Things That Stood Between Him and the Power of God in His Life:
1. We must pay the same price that Jesus did.
"The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above His Lord!" Matthew 10:24-25
*To get the same results that Jesus did, you have to pay the same price!
John 14:12 ***If the disciple could attain the same results which Jesus did WITHOUT PAYING THE SAME PRICE WHICH JESUS PAID, then it would have to be confessed that the disciple had become greater than his master.
*Persistent, habitual prayer was one of the outstanding characteristics of the life of Christ.
Luke 5:15-16 Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Mark 1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Luke 6:12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.
2. It is possible to be like Jesus.
"The disciple is not above his master; BUT every one that is fully trained SHALL BE AS HIS MASTER". Luke 6:40
A. Because when He lived on this earth, He lived as a man: Heb. 2:14,17; I Tim. 2:5; Phil. 2:7,8; Matt. 8:27; Luke 4:4; John 5:19,30.
B. He used the same source for His miracles that we have (the Holy Spirit) : Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; Luke 10:19; Acts 10:38;
John 17:18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.
I Peter 2:21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
***If we are to be like Him in power, we must also be like Him in holiness, in consecration, in meekness, in compassion, in prayer and fellowship with the Father, in faith, in fasting and in self denial.
3. Be perfect. Matthew 5:48
It’s our goal. Colossians 1:28
Can I be perfect? Yes, in God’s eyes!

Master Class-Healing-3
I. Review.
A. We talked about why we can heal like Jesus did. We looked at our covenant of healing, healing being the children’s bread, healing is part of the atoning work of Jesus on the cross, and Jesus said that we would do the same and greater works than Jesus did.
B. We pinpointed two difference between us and Jesus: we have a sin history from the past that our flesh still remembers and the second difference is that Jesus knew how the other world, heaven, operated-what heart attitudes we have to have to access it, what thinking we needed to have to partake of the power of the heavenly kingdom.
C. Last week, my whole goal was to reveal the unbelief in your own life that is always lurking beneath the surface.
Discussion Questions:
1. How many saw their unbelief surface?
2. How many of you took the opportunity to reflect on your past and see how unbelief rose at keys points in your life to stop God from moving in it? Anyone want to share about that in their lives?
Mark 6:45-52 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.” Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
*They had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, because their heart was hardened.
*Jesus expected them to learn from the miracle that they had just seen and because of that miracle now have a new normal for their life in the way they looked at life and a new bottom threshold for what they could believe for God in their life.
*We must learn from the unbelief in our lives or we will always struggle with unbelief.
II. New Material.
A. Let’s look at three problems associated with God’s power working in our life.
1. Problem #1: power with God does not come cheaply.
*Think about Gehazi. He served Elisha for years, but God’s miracle anointing never transferred to him.
2 Kings 4:29, 31 Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”… Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”
*Nothing of value comes without cost in this life. Freedom must be fought for, a house takes years of paying your mortgage, talent must be developed slowly over many years, even Lebron James has to practice!
B. What was the cost to Samson’s great strength?
Judges 13:3-5, 24,25-read that as a group and let me know what you found.
The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son. 4 Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean. 5 You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”… The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the Lord blessed him… and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
*The Nazirite was consecrated or dedicated to God.
*Three things God regulated-1) Diet(vv. 3-4)
Numbers 6:1-3 The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man or woman wants to make a special vow, a vow of dedication to the Lord as a Nazirite, they must abstain from wine and other fermented drink and must not drink vinegar made from wine or other fermented drink. They must not drink grape juice or eat grapes or raisins.
2) Appearance(v. 5) “‘During the entire period of their Nazirite vow, no razor may be used on their head. They must be holy until the period of their dedication to the Lord is over; they must let their hair grow long.
3) Associations(vv. 6-7). ‘Throughout the period of their dedication to the Lord, the Nazirite must not go near a dead body. Even if their own father or mother or brother or sister dies, they must not make themselves ceremonially unclean on account of them, because the symbol of their dedication to God is on their head. He is considered separate to the Lord.
>When it comes to wire-some metals conduct better than others-it’s interesting that the metals that conduct the best and the rarest and most expensive-gold and platinum.
C. We are to be chosen vessels
2 Tim 2:19-22 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”
In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

2. Problem #2: God’s power can’t be bought for any price.
Acts 8:9-10,18-21 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”… When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
2 Kings 5:1-5, 15-16 Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.
Now bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”
Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten sets of clothing… Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.
750 pounds of silver ($23.93/ounce), 150 ($1,985.60/ounce)pounds of gold= $5,052,600.00

3. Problem #3-the church seems to be powerless. Notice the contrast between these two scriptures:
Matthew 16:18-19 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Mark 9:17-18 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

11 Things That Stood Between Him and the Power of God in His Life:
1. We must pay the same price that Jesus did.
"The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above His Lord!"
Matthew 10:24-25 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters.
He means 2 things: that if Satan and the world does something to me, they will do it to you, 2) to get the same results that Jesus did, you have to pay the same price!
John 14:12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

Text: Luke 6:40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.
*The word Christian means like Christ. We don’t understand what that implies. When we say the name Jesus- Jesus means “Jehovah saves” and speaks of His work on the cross to atone for our sins. When we use the word “Christ” it means “the anointed one” and speaks of the anointing and miracles that He performed because of it.
Acts 8:5-7 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming Christ to them. The crowds with one accord were giving attention to what was said by Philip, as they heard and saw the signs which he was performing. For in the case of many who had unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been paralyzed and lame were healed.
*It is possible to be like Jesus.

3. Be perfect.
Matthew 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
τέλειος, Definition: having reached its end, complete, perfect
*Being perfect is our goal. Colossians 1:28 NKJ Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
*Can I be perfect? Yes, in God’s eyes!
>God called two people perfect (newer versions use blameless, upright)
1) Job-Job 1:8 KJV And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
*Here is a great definition of perfect: fearing God and turning away from evil.
>Noah Genesis 6:9 KJV These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
IV. Jesus is our example and measure for conduct.
I Peter 2:21, Mat 7:21
Think like Christ. Phil 4:8
Walk and live like Him! Develop this more with live and walk from Ephesians
V. Deny yourself. Luke 9:23
It means drawing closer to God. James 4:8a
Mk 1:35 praying when it wasn’t convenient.
Mk 9:25,29 Jesus had already paid the price.
>Oscar-second time I didn’t pay the price.
VI. Take up your cross daily. Luke 9:23
*By the word cross, I mean that burden or weight of sacrifice, which if we wanted to we could put off to one side, but we voluntarily carry for the good of others. This cross is such that in the natural we would put to one side, but when we realize that there is no other way to bring salvation, delieverance, or healing to the lost, sick and suffering, we voluntarily bear our cross.
>God told Zury and I that would could have an easy life with little blessing or choose a hard road with great blessing.
>Heb 12:2 Jesus and his cross.
>Moses & his cross. Heb 11:24-26
>Paul- Acts 20:22-24
*Daily-once is not enough.
*There is no vacation from the cross. Matt 14:13-14.
VII. He must increase; I must decrease. Jn 3:30.
This point talks about our flesh and our pride. James 4:6, Heb 11:24-26. Pride of…
…Face-appearance- I look better than so and so.
…Place-position-I’m better than so and so or I can’t do that work it is beneath me.

…Pace-work-better and quicker than so and so.
…Grace-spiritual pride-fasting, buildings, miracles, and humility.
*The power & success of any human ministry depends in the proportion or greatness of God in his life.
>Mark 16:20; Zechariah 4:6
Before the disciples said, Luke 10:17, now they say Acts 3:12,16.

*God has never made it a habit to use something that doesn’t belong to Him! Rom 12:1

God is power and we are in Him. John 15:4-5

Studying the Miracles of Jesus-Mark Chapter 1
I. Review.
A. Last week we looked at three problems associated with God’s power working in our life.
1. Problem #1: power with God does not come cheaply.
>Gehazi did not receive the anointing of Elisha because he didn’t have a servant’s heart.
>We looked at the three costs of Samson’s great strength (diet, appearance, associations).
2. Problem #2: God’s power can’t be bought for any price.
3. Problem #3-the church seems to be powerless.
B. We looked at A. A. Allen’s vision and the 11 Things That Stood Between Him and the Power of God in His Life.
*If the disciple could attain the same results which Jesus did WITHOUT PAYING THE SAME PRICE WHICH JESUS PAID, then it would have to be said that the disciple had become greater than his master.
*Today, we are going to begin studying from THE Master-how Jesus healed the sick. There are 18 healing stories in the book of Mark. We will begin studying there. I don’t expect us to finish in the month that we have left, but I do expect us to squeeze out enough revelation from the ones that we do study to learn how to apply it to ourselves and the people we meet on a daily basis.
II. Four Lessons that we can learn from Mark 1:
A. Lesson #1: The healing anointing is released by contact.
Mark 1:29-31 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
B. There are two ways that healing is released: by the gift of miracles (dunamis) and by the gift of faith.
I Corinthians 12:8-9
To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers…
C. Working of Miracles/Works of Power
1. Definition: a work of power. The Greek word here is dunamis.
2. How it manifests: it is sensed as fire or heat in your hands. Often, when you lay hands on someone, they sense heat or fire going into them.
3. New Testament usage: In the Gospels and Acts, the word dunamis is used 31 times to describe works of power, but the surprising thing is that the way they used the word is different from the way we have traditionally use it. It is very evident that miracles or more correctly "works of power" refer to the transference of power or anointing that produces an instantaneous result. This was often used in relation to healing:
Luke 6:19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
Luke 8:46 But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me."
Acts 19:11-12 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
This was often used in relation to casting out spirits:
Mark 9:38-39 "Teacher," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us." "Do not stop him," Jesus said. "No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me
Acts 19:11-12 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
In the New Testament, it was the most prevalent form of healing the sick (54% of the time), so much so that Jesus became known as the man who laid hands:
Mark 5:22-23 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.",
Mark 6:2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?
Jesus talked about the power in His hands! When we talk about laying hands on the sick it refers to transferring dunamis to the person. As a person praying for the sick, my goal is to make sure that dunamis enters them.
Question: Is it possible that you have dunamis in your hands?
4. When do we receive dunamis? Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
*How do you know that you have dunamis to lay your hands on the sick?
Mark 16:17-18 And these signs will accompany those who believe… they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

5. How many of you have felt the burning or heat in your hands-whether it happened when you were praying for someone or in the presence of a need for healing?
Question: What do you think that God was trying to tell you?
*If you are going about your daily life and you feel like fire or heat is in your hands, the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you that there is someone in your vicinity that needs it!
D. Notice: that in this instance, faith is not mentioned in relation to Peter’s mother in law getting well.
Mark 1:29-31 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
Hebrews 4:2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.
*There are times that your faith is enough, especially with lost people. God loves to show His goodness to people that don’t know Him.
Acts 28:7-9 There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and for three days entertained us hospitably. His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.
*Question: Notice that Paul did not place his hands on him right away. Why?
Answer: He was waiting for the gift to manifest.

*Notice a second thing about this situation: When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.
E. Here is a recurring theme throughout the New Testament: Lesson #2: Miracles give birth to miracles.
>When Paul healed Publius’s father, everyone else on the island came forward to receive their healing.
>When Jesus stooped down and began to write in the floor-He was waiting on the Holy Spirit to give Him guidance.
*This is why your testimony is so important. When you look in the Gospels, begin to ask yourself how many people were healed because of testimonies: blind Bartimaeus; Centurion’s servant, woman with the issue of blood.
>how Chris got healed: the bus that took people to the Ernest Angley healing crusade became a breeding place of faith for miracles because of the testimonies.
*Now let’s get back to our text:
Mark 1:32-34
That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
*Miracles give birth to miracles.
>testimony of one of the most famous healing evangelists in India: the greatest miracles always occur on the last few nights of a three or four week crusade. Faith builds because the people see testimony after testimony, miracle after miracle.
*How do we use this to our advantage? Get in your group and discuss how we can use this spiritual truth to our advantage.
Mark 6:1-2 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
>Jesus shared about the miracles that He had seen in His ministry so that they people there’s faith would grow and also be able to receive their miracle.
F. Lesson #3: Anointing is birthed in the presence of God.
Mark 1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
*The anointing is the power and presence of God in somebody. After you get done ministering to people of the Spirit, there is a tiredness and a drained feeling stronger than if you had worked 12 hours of yard work.
>I know prophets or people with gifts of healing that after a crusade will sleep and rest for three days afterwards.
*The anointing must be renewed in His presence only.
John 4:13-14 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
*The presence of God in us is likened to a well or a spring. It must be drawn up into you everyday. You have to go to the well!
Ephesians 4:18-19 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, (Amplified: but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit) speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;
*The Greek tense here for be filled could literally be translated: be being filled- we need to constantly fill ourselves with the Holy Spirit’s presence and power. It doesn’t stay full.
*This is why Jesus said in Mark 9:29 So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”
G. Lesson #4: The will of God is healing.
Mark 1:40-42 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.
*Here Jesus answers once and for all the question is it God’s will to healing the sick.
H. Jesus was the very expression of God’s will.
Hebrews 1:1-3 Amplified In many separate revelations each of which set forth a portion of the Truth] and in different ways God spoke of old to [our] forefathers in and by the prophets, [But] in the last of these days He has spoken to us in [the person of a] Son, Whom He appointed Heir and lawful Owner of all things, also by and through Whom He created the worlds and the reaches of space and the ages of time [He made, produced, built, operated, and arranged them in order]. He is the sole expression of the glory of God [the Light-being, the out-raying or radiance of the divine], and He is the perfect imprint and very image of [God’s] nature, upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His mighty word of power.
John 5:19 Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.
John 8:38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence
I. God never changes His will.
Exodus 15:26 I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.”
Malachi 3:6 “I the Lord do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.
Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Mark 16:20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
J. God is no respecter of persons. He has no favorites: He treats everyone the same.
Romans 2:11 KJV For there is no respect of persons with God.
NASB For there is no partiality with God.
NIV For God does not show favoritism.
Amplified: For God shows no partiality [undue favor or unfairness; with Him one man is not different from another].
*If Jesus said that it was His will to heal even one man then it is His will to heal every man. What He does for one; he does for everyone. And if He won’t do it for one; He won’t do it for anyone.
>Hezekiah’s sickness is not a sign that it wasn’t God’s will to heal Him; rather, it was a realization that Hezekiah did not have faith to be healed.
Acts 3:16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.
Acts 14:7-9 they continued to preach the gospel. In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed
*What do you think that Paul had to be talking about for this man to actually have faith to be healed? (recounting testimonies of people healed that he saw, teaching on what Jesus did for them-what the cross of Jesus bought for them-the gospel).

How Our Thinking Affects us Receiving our Miracle
Review Homework: Study the healing stories in Mark chapter 2 & 3 and tell me at least one thing that you can learn from how Jesus healed them.
I. Introduction.
*Last week we looked at how Jesus healed the sick in the book of Mark. From chapter one we found four lessons:
1. The healing anointing is released by contact.
2. Miracles give birth to miracles.
3. Anointing is birthed in the presence of God.
4. The will of God is healing.
II. Today, we are going to look at a healing story in Mark 2:
Mark 2:1-12
A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…” He said to the paralytic, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
A. Notice where Jesus is: A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.
Where is home? He was from Nazareth, about 20 miles away. Most scholars believe that he is referring to Peter’s home and that as long as Jesus was in the city of Capernaum that he would stay there.
B. Question: What has already happened in this city with Jesus?
1. He has taught in their synagogue and cast out an evil spirit there.
2. He healed Peter’s mother in law from a fever.
3. Healed many people in the area.
vv. 32-34 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons,
C. Question: Why is it important to know what has already happened in this city when we see Jesus come in again?
*Answer: The many miracles that occurred makes the people have a higher expectation of miracles happening; their faith is higher. When they see Him they are going to expect the same and more.
>TL Osborne’s story in Africa: when he would leave an area, the long term change was visible because the average people would see and interact with people THAT THEY KNEW that all their life was crippled, deaf or blind. Seeing them everyday walking, seeing and hearing is something that changes an area.
D. Capernaum is a high expectation and faith area.
Luke also records this story and he tells us some background information that Mark does not:
Luke 5:17 One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.
*Question: Other than the people in Capernaum, who else has come to see Jesus?
Answer: Pharisees and teachers of the law.
Question: Do you think that they were supportive of Him and His message?
No. In fact, from this point on, many were against Him and His message.
vv.6-7 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
*Does anyone know who the scribes were?
Scribes: Scribes had knowledge of the law and could draft legal documents (contracts for marriage, divorce, loans, inheritance, mortgages, the sale of land, and the like). Every village had at least one scribe. A scribe was a career.
*Who were the Pharisees?
Pharisees: Pharisees were members of a religious party within Judaism that believed in resurrection and in following legal traditions that were ascribed not to the Bible but to “the traditions of the fathers.” Like the scribes, they were also well-known legal experts: so many scribes were Pharisees also.
*These two groups were the ones that believed that they had the monopoly on understanding the Bible and God. And they expected everyone to believe the same way they did. If anyone was teaching anything about the Bible, they had to come and comment and approve or disapprove of them.
>when we first went to the Soviet Union, the bishops came from the Ukraine to meet us and talk with us to see if they would support us. They did not. They were more interested in us promoting their pet doctrines than in evangelizing the lost and starting churches. We had to abandon them and start from scratch with new converts. That’s what Jesus had to do: none of his disciples were scribes, Pharisees, or teachers of the law.
E. Lesson #1: When we need a miracle, there will always be people in our life that distract us from God moving our life or that want to steal our faith.
>When Jesus was dealing with the paralyzed man, He had to stop and address the thinking of the Pharisees and Scribes.
*There are different ways to deal with unbelief. How did Jesus deal with the unbelief in that house?
When unbelief fills the atmosphere, it must be dealt with. We will see other ways that Jesus dealt with unbelief (take the person out of the area where unbelief was high, encourage them to trust God, rebuke the person for their unbelief, teach the word so that they would have a basis to trust God.
F. To receive anything from God, you are going to have to deal with the thoughts that Satan is injecting in your mind (whether it comes from other people or just pops into yours!). It is those thoughts that are stopping your faith that God is going to do what He said He would.
>What are some of the thoughts or things that people tell us when we are trusting God?
1. Your doctor said this…
2. The economy is so tough, there aren’t any jobs out there…
3. I’ve tried this before and it didn’t work the last time.
4. I haven’t been living lately the way I should.
5. I don’t have enough faith to get this.
6. I hope this works-we have to do more than hope to get something from God.
7. Am I going to get it this time or be disappointed?
8. I feel like a big hypocrite up here. What could possibly happen tonight?
G. The greatest battles in your life will occur in your mind as you fight against thoughts that Satan places there. This is a daily battle that doesn’t let up.
Question: How is it possible for Satan to come and place thoughts in me against God?
James 1:14-15 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
Answer: The fall of Adam & Eve into sin corrupted our mind. Your mind is fallen!
Ephesians 4:17-18 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.
Ephesians 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts.
*Our brain is the hardware and our thinking is the software. We are born and raised with corrupted software. Just because Jesus is in your heart doesn’t mean He’s in your head.
*Our minds are still filled with corrupted thoughts. When Jesus comes into your life, its like the Normandy Invasion-God establishes a beachhead in your life. From there, God will redeem the rest of your life, IF you will let Him.
3. All redemption, all the activity of God in our life happens as we allow God to do so.
H. God tells us that our fight in life is to destroy strongholds of thinking in our lives.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
Where are these strongholds?
We demolish arguments and every reasoning that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
I. Every thought that Satan tries to sow in your mind is an enemy and has to be taken out by spearpoint. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
J. You are the doorkeeper of your mind. God does not control your thoughts. You are free to think whatever you want.
*We make a decision about every thought that we think. Every thought that you don’t take captive, will take you captive.
*Every bondage in our life is a house of thoughts. If you don’t deal with the thoughts around your problems today, you problems will never change.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
K. Question: How do we make thoughts obedient to Christ?
Answer: The answer is found in Ephesians 6:11, 16-17 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil… in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
*Our shield protects us from his attacks and our sword is what we use to strike back. So God is telling us to use our faith to stop the attacks and use God’s word to strike back.
>When Satan tempted Jesus with thoughts, Jesus didn’t crumble in His faith, He fought back with God’s word.
Luke 4:3-4 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
*If you are the Son of God-Satan directly attacked what God had told Jesus. Jesus didn’t listen, He didn’t crumble, He didn’t go into depression. He took out His sword and used it against Satan: And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
L. You must do the same:
1. My doctor said this…
Isaiah 53:1, 5 Who has believed our report?... He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.
2. The economy is so tough, there aren’t any jobs out there…
Deuteronomy 8:18 “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth,
Psalm 112:1-3 Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches will be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.
3. I’ve tried this before and it didn’t work the last time.
Mark 11:22-24 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
*Either Jesus is wrong or you are wrong.

4. I haven’t been living lately the way I should.
Psalm 103:2-3 Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins
Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.

Matthew 17:20 I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”

James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.
M. What do you look like according to God’s word?
*To the devil, you look like the Son of God with power over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means harm you.
Romans 8:29-30 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren; and whom He predestined, these He also called; and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.(God says that you are glorified!)
N. When we come to Christ, we must give up our old way of thinking.
Isaiah 55:7-8 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
> God told Joshua in Joshua 1:7-8 "Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. "This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous,
*Now it’s time to take out our swords and use them to destroy the strongholds of thinking that are stopping God from moving in our lives!

Carrying the Presence of God with You
Review Homework from last week: Re-read Mark 2:1-12 and Luke’s version of the same miracle (Luke 5:17-26). What other lessons on how Jesus healed the sick do you find in this story?
Here is the verse we will focus on tonight:
Luke 5:17 One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.
Question (ask the class): How did Jesus know that the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick if he was just teaching and nothing had yet occurred?
Answer: He knew who He was and what He carried wherever he walked.
I. Knowing Who you Are and What you Carry makes all the difference between God’s presence manifesting in your situation and failure.
A. This is the first thing that Satan tried to steal from Jesus: knowing who He was.
Luke 4:3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
Luke 4:9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.
*Jesus knew who He was-the Son of God and because He had this revelation, it allowed God to move in Him in a great way.
B. You always act according to who you are. Your identity defines how you think, how you react in any situation, what you say and what you do.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
Romans 8: 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ
John 1:12-13 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
C. Paul understood how important this was and made this his prayer for the church:
Ephesians 1:18-19 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
D. Because you are a son or daughter of God, you are also something else: the temple of the Holy Spirit.
I Corinthians 6:19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?
II. It is important to know what you carry as a child of God: the Holy Spirit.
A. Peter knew what he carried.
Acts 3:4-9 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.
Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. When all the people saw him walking and praising God
*Notice two things: Peter told the man to look at him, and then told him ‘what I do have I give you.’
*Peter knew what he carried- he carried the presence of God.
B. Jesus knew that He carried the presence of God. Everywhere He went, He proclaimed what He carried.
Luke 4:16-19 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
C. You carry the presence of God on you.
Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
*Witness refers to acts of power done by the Holy Spirit on you.
Discussion Question: Have you ever sensed the presence of God on you? Have you ever sensed God’s presence on you when you were praying/ministering for someone?
Hebrews 2:3-4 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
*Notice how the Gospel must be confirmed: God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us
D. Inside of you is the latent presence of God and He is enough to meet every need in your life, and every need in the life of the people around you.
*Why do I say latent? Because in you and on you is enough power to heal every sickness on the planet, meet every need in your life, but it will not work if it is not activated.
*Notice how God’s power was activated or not activated in Jesus:
Mark 6:1-6 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He marveled because of their unbelief.
*Was the Holy Spirit’s presence activated here in Nazareth? (No!)
Mark 5:25-34 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
Was the Holy Spirit’s presence activated here ? Yes.
*Discuss this question with your group: what activates the presence of God?
III. Looking at these two stories, we can see three things that activate the presence of God.
A. First, the presence of God is activated through words.
Luke 4:16-21 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. Jesus spoke that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him. In fact, everywhere He went, He told them that.
*Peter when he healed the lame man, he activated the presence of God by his words:
Acts 3:4-5 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.
Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”

*When Jesus was in Nazareth, He activated the presence of God by sharing the miracles that had been done through Him:
Mark 6:2 And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!
*How did they know about the mighty works performed? He shared what had been done by Him!
*I believe that the power of the Lord was present when Jesus was in that house because Jesus had either been sharing from the scripture about the anointing on Him OR He had just got done sharing about the healings and miracles that had happened in His ministry up to that day.
***In our lives, the presence of God will not activate itself because God has given us free will and will not violate it.
*Even God Himself activated the presence of the Holy Spirit by words:
Genesis 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
*The presence of the Holy Spirit was hovering over the earth, but not doing anything until God spoke:
Genesis 1:3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
*If you want to activate the presence of God in your life, you must either speak out loud what God has said about you, or what God has already done in you!
Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters
Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place,
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass
Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night
Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind:
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image,
*But we think that we are better than God. We want the presence and power of God in our life, but we don’t want to activate it with our words.
B. Saying comes before seeing:
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. and God saw the light
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass… And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night… And God saw that it was good.
*If you want a change of scenery, you have to change the sounds first!
*You want to see something, but God first wants to hear something.
v.23 I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed…
*Our words activate the presence of God within us.
C. Words are not enough: they must be faith-filled words to activate the presence of God.
>The woman with the issue of blood had faith-filled words:
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
D. In the same way, unbelief-filled words can stop the presence of God from activating:
Mark 6:3-6 And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He marveled because of their unbelief.
>David had a similar experience when confronted by the giant. When everyone else looked at the giant they were full of fear and ran from Goliath. But God reminded David of how he had already killed lions and bears, and that filled him with faith and the words that came out of His mouth was something different: David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”
vv. 34-37 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
*Faith filled words always activate the presence of God. After he said those words, the presence of God came and caused even King Saul to say:
“Go, and the Lord be with you.”
IV. Question: How do we apply this in our lives?
1. You are a child of God and carry the presence of God. He goes with you wherever you go.
2. His presence and power will not be activated in your life’s situations without your words-faith filled words.
*If you need the miraculous presence of God, you need to just say out loud the word of God that applies to your need or situation, or begin to recount out loud the many times that God has helped you in the past. This activates the presence of God for your situation in the here and now.
Psalm 77:11-15 I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples. With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
Psalm 105:1-5 Make known His deeds among the peoples. Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
Speak of all His wonders. Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad. Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face continually. Remember His wonders which He has done,
*Why? It activates the presence of the Lord to work in your life and situation.
Isaiah 12:4 And in that day you will say, “Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted.”
Isaiah 63:11-12 Then His people remembered the days of old, of Moses. Where is He who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit in the midst of them, Who caused His glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses,
Who divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name
*Today, we need to be like Elisha who when he was confronted with his need said:
2 Kings 2:14 He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over.
*When he spoke, the presence of God activated.
What will you say today, or better said what have you been saying to either activate the presence of God in your life or grieve it?

Studying the Miracles of Jesus-Mark Chapter 5
Don’t Give Up When you Don’t See Instant Results
Homework-Joseph asked you to read Mark 3:1-5 to prepare for today’s study but I decided that we will talk about that healing story when we do continue this Master Class next year.
*Today, I want to skip to the next healing story of Jesus and it takes place in Mark 5:1-13:
*I want to look at this story with new eyes.
Mark 5:1-13 They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him, and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones. Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!”
For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
Get into a group and tell me at least three things that you can learn from this story about demons and casting out demons.
*You need to see three things here:
1. No matter how bad off you are, the devil can’t stop you from coming to God and getting free of whatever is destroying you.
2. Some sicknesses are demon inspired.
3. Jesus had been saying over and over again to the demon to leave and it didn’t.
*Let’s try to understand what is happening here.
II. Point #1: No matter how bad off you are, the devil can’t stop you from coming to God and getting free of whatever is destroying you.
*Here we see a man who is extremely demon possessed. He had a legion of demons inside him.
*And yet, this man, no matter how full of the devil he was, still was able to come to Jesus.
*Today, no matter what you’ve done, no matter what has happened to you, you are never so far gone that God can’t touch you tonight!
Look at the four “comes” of the Bible:
Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.
Isaiah 55:1-3 Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat… “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? … “Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live…
John 6:37 the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.
III. Point #2: Some sicknesses are demon inspired.
> Job 2:4-7 "Skin for skin!" Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life. But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face." The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.”
> John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
>Acts 10: 38 says, "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with Him.”
A. Jesus healed all that were oppressed of the devil. Some sicknesses have at their root, a demonic oppression.
Mark 9:17, 25-27 And one of the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute…When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again.” After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, “He is dead!” But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up.
*The boy had a deaf and mute spirit that caused him to be deaf and mute.
B. Most of the demons that we deal with on this planet are what I call “radiators.” They radiate one power.
Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Get into your groups and discuss this question: have you ever witnessed demonic activity, oppression, or possession? Share about that.
*Here four classes of demons are mentioned.
1. The first class of demons mentioned here is rulers; the King James version uses the word “principality.” They rule over powers and other lesser demons. Luke 11:24-26
2. The second class of demons mentioned here is “powers.” Powers work with ruler spirits but are under them. The energy of a power is beamed outward from itself, broadcast like radio waves, over the territory. A power is a demonic spirit whose primary activity is to blanket a given area with the energy of its particular evil.
*Here are other example of “radiators:” Luke 13:11, Matthew 12:22
3. A good example of a “spirit of infirmity” is seen in a person who is sick and it seems they get one thing after another. They had a fever, and when the fever is gone, their joints hurt, then when that is better their stomach hurts, and on and on. If you seem to have one sickness after another, it is very possible that it is being caused by a spirit of infirmity.
IV. Point #3: Jesus had been saying over and over again to the demon to leave and it didn’t.
*Question: What is the lesson learned here?
A. Many people when confronted with a situation that doesn’t turn around instantly just give up.
Notice Jesus in today’s story: Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!”
For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion; for we are many.”
*Jesus had been telling the demon to come out and it wouldn’t and He was asking its name and it resisted talking to Jesus.
B. Some demons and some sicknesses are stubborn; they resist leaving.
*I believe that demons have learned over the years that they can outlast most people.
C. The anointing in you hurts them. To help us understand this, we feel a similar thing when we have sinned and God is convicting us. The presence of God (light) exposing our sin causes pain in our inner man. The worse we have sinned, the worse the conviction. We feel terrible because of the sin in us. A demon who is completely sinful when he experiences the presence of God, only feels great pain.
D. We must persevere long enough to receive the promise of God.
Hebrews 6:10-15 For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, "I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU." And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.
*God is telling us that if we want to receive something from Him we have to imitate Abraham who held onto God’s promise and didn’t let go no matter how long it took.
Hebrews 10:36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.
*Most of us don’t have the stick-to-it-ness to bring the promise of God to fruition in our lives.
E. I believe that there is a whisperer who tells us to give up.
2 Kings 6:33 The king said, “This disaster is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
Job 2:9 “His wife said to him, Are you still holding on….curse God and die.”
F. We must be like Abraham. He is our example for how to persevere with a promise. Let’s see how Abraham did it:
Genesis 15:5-6 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Step One: God promised.
Step Two: Abraham believed when the promise was given.
Step Three: God saw his faith and credited it to him.
Step Four: He received-it took another 20 years but he received!
Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
V. Here are the four steps to using your faith for healing or demonic oppression:
A. Step One: We lay hands on you in obedience to the Lord Jesus commandment.
Mark 16:17-18 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name… they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."
*When we lay hands on you, you most often will feel something come into your body-that is the presence of the Holy Spirit that if mixed with faith will actually bring healing to your body.
B. Step Two: You mix the anointing that is going into your body with faith-believing that when we lay hands on you, God is actually healing you at that very moment.
Hebrews 4:2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.
1. Hope is wonderful, but hope never healed anyone. Did you get healed when they laid hands on you? I hope I did. You didn’t get anything.
C. Step Three: Faith must be released with your mouth.
I believe I receive now.
*Real faith is not hoping that God will heal you, nor knowing that he is able to heal you. It is joyful assurance that the work is as good as done because God WHO CANNOT LIE has promised - yes, even guaranteed - to heal YOU!
Mark 11:23 "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.
*Your faith does not begin to work until you begin to talk.
*You need to speak out what you are believing in your heart.
Isaiah 57:19 I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” Says the LORD, “ And I will heal him.”
*God takes the words of our lips and counts it as faith.
>When God told Abraham that he would have a child in his old age, Abraham believed what God told him-and he changed the way he talked about it too.
Romans 4:20-22 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
*Abraham gave glory to God with his mouth and God credited it to him as faith and he received the miracle of a child.
Romans 10:9-13 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
1. Notice that the heart and mouth must believe the same thing that God is saying.
2. What do we believe-that Jesus was raised from the dead-a work that was finished in the past. Faith believes that which was already done and makes the impossible happen today!
D. Step Four: Remind ourselves of all the times that God has done what He promised to us in the past.
*If you have a living relationship with God, there are many examples of God doing what He said He would do.
>We have so many examples here today!
Mark 5:36 Amplified Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not be seized with alarm and struck with fear; only keep on believing.
